Analytics: more than just website traffic numbers

You’re probably familiar with Google Analytics.

It’s an incredibly feature-rich tool that lets you dig deep into your website traffic. It allows you to ask very detailed questions with just a few clicks of the mouse.

If you understand the question you want to ask, Google Analytics can usually give you the answer, even if you’ve never used it before. You won’t even need to crack a manual.

Not to say that there isn’t a learning curve. There is. But only because there is so much information you can access. So many different ways to use it.

These are the kinds of tools I love to use (and build).

Tools that are simple and elegant; fast and powerful.

It’s about insight. It’s about being able to see things that are not easily seen in your data.

And while it’s powerful to have tools like that for your website traffic, don’t you wish you had that level of insight into every aspect of your business?

If you’re a one man shop, of course, this is less challenging than for a large organization.

In fact, the larger the organization, the more difficult it is to get your numbers together and make them useful.

This is the realm of Business Intelligence. “BI” for short.

There are a lot of solutions out there for BI. Most of these require huge capital investment. You need hardware and software, both of which can be very expensive. You need trained staff to operate it all. And even then it can take a long time to ramp up to the point where it is useful.

Those not willing (or able) to make that kind of investment often end up with a bunch of guys in a back room with Excel spreadsheets. They spend their days trying to figure out how to operate the business effectively and efficiently.

Doing things this way can be slow and cumbersome. Very often, even if you get the insight you want, it is too late to do anything with it. You’re trying to steer the ship on a straight course, but there is so much lag in the system, it’s going all over the ocean!

Fortunately, we live in the 21st Century, and we now have 21st Century tools available to us. Not only Google Analytics for our traffic data, but tools that are equally elegant and powerful for every area of business.

I recently interviewed internationally renowned expert Naveen Sharma on this topic.

If you have ever had challenges getting the insight you need into your own business, you should definitely watch this video.
